As speculated before this event, Metaverse was already leaked as the official name change for Facebook. It was the talk of the town from the past few days as a lot of people came forward while theorizing why the Facebook name change was a good decision. And as of now on Oct 28th, 2021, Facebook’s name is officially changed and will be now known as Meta. However, it is not to be confused with its most famous social media platform  – Facebook. As the parent company name has been changed to Meta Platforms Inc from Facebook Inc.

Facebook has changed its name on other social media platforms and announced it with delight. It was also announced on its official page on Twitter which was renamed as Meta with this message –

Why is Facebook changing its name?

If you are wondering why all of a sudden Facebook has changed its name, let us break it to you. Facebook was formed in 2004 in Cambridge University with the sole purpose of connecting its students as a photo-sharing platform. It expanded to be this worldwide phenomenon very soon and has almost 2.89 billion monthly active users on Facebook currently.

But with the expansion, Facebook came under several allegations, security, and privacy threats. Along with the cyber attacks, data breaches, and harmful effects of social media, Facebook is also deemed toxic for the mental health of people. But what stood most was the concerns of the user data being exposed to Facebook and used for advertisements. Facebook has come to light as the social media giant which will use all of your information in whichever way possible to monetize it.

As the public became more aware of it, they demanded a change in its policies. The best example of it was the recent case where many countries came forward with the threat to ban Facebook completely in their region if they do not declare the user data usage.

Facebook is also one of the parent companies to own WhatsApp which is the largest instant messaging service in the world. Another of the most famous is Instagram which is the photo-sharing platform. This way Facebook has covered most of its user base around the world and hence answerable to a lot of questions raised on it.

Not only this, but Facebook has always been under the radar of its security protocols as it has failed its users multiple times. The constant data breaches and the exposures put the users at risk. Another big issue has been Facebook being one of the hot spots for the spread of fake news. Being one of the largest networks, it amplifies any kind of news shared on its platforms and can spark a rumor as quickly. Although they have tried to curb all of these issues, Facebook is still under the suspicion of many.

With all the negative news, Mark Zukerberg had decided to change its name and focus more than being a social media platform. It was then decided to rebrand itself and thereby change the focus to the new technology which they have been working on.

What else to expect from Facebook Metaverse?

Facebook’s new name as Metaverse which is a collective name for all of its services is inspired by the true definition of the metaverse. Metaverse is a virtual realm where users can connect with the 3D avatars. So is the vision of Mark Zuckerberg to take Meta to its new lengths by creating a virtual reality space for users to connect. As Facebook already has its employees working on it for a long time, the digital world will expand horizons for business, art, music, and entertainment.

As stated in the Thursday conference Mark said “If we all work at it, and within the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers,”

With that being said, a new Virtual reality headset-Cambria was also announced. It will make the screen appear so close to your face that you will feel that you are in the virtual world. The highlight of this headset is that it reads the user’s emotions and sends them to the metaverse. They are expected to be released next year. Not only this, Facebook says they are working on fully functional AR glasses. Along with that, they have announced that Oculus Quest will be focusing on working with virtual reality apps.
