WhatsApp Going to Introduce ‘Channels’ for Message Broadcasting

WhatsApp is reportedly set to launch a new feature that will allow iOS users to broadcast their messages through the app. The new feature, known as ‘Channels’, is similar to the one currently available on Instagram and promises to revolutionize the way users share information.

WhatsApp is developing “Channels” that will enable users to receive useful updates from their chosen sources. Although the feature is still in development for Android users, the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.8.0.75 update, available on the TestFlight app, suggests that the company is planning to introduce this feature to iOS users soon.

According to a recent report from WABetalnfo, WhatsApp intends to change the name of its Status tab to “Updates” with the goal to include channels in this section.

What are WhatsApp Channels?

Unlike group chats, Channels offer users the privacy of individual messaging while allowing them to broadcast messages to a wider audience. This feature ensures that the phone numbers and user information of those joining the channel are always kept private. However, it’s important to note that messages sent within a Channel are not end-to-end encrypted, as this concept doesn’t apply to one-to-many communication. It’s worth mentioning that the end-to-end encryption for private messaging will remain unaffected by this new feature.

This feature ensures that users have complete control over which channels they subscribe to, and their subscriptions remain private, even if they haven’t added the channel’s creator as a contact. Furthermore, users won’t be auto-subscribed to channels, and there are no algorithmic recommendations or social graphs that push content to users that they didn’t explicitly choose to see.

The feature includes the option to search for channels using handles, which are essentially usernames for the channels. This makes it easier for users to find channels they want to follow, simply by typing in the channel’s username.

With this feature, users will find it easier to receive updates that they’re interested in. While channels are still under development, a future WhatsApp update is anticipated to include them.
