In the past few months, several apps & even operating systems, like macOS Mojave have been upgraded to a feature called Dark Mode or Night Mode. It is essentially a fine color scheme with White Text on Black Background.
The idea of reading or watching digital content in ‘Dark Mode’ is to reduce eye fatigue & also helps extend battery life. Innovative companies, like Google has been rapidly integrating all its apps including Google News, Messenger and Phone with Dark theme to make reading process more convenient. And now the feature has been received by Google Maps!
Previously, the navigation app was set default to automatically switch between bright & dark theme according to the time of the day & vision requirements. But now users can manually set the ‘Dark Mode’ permanently!
You must be thinking why anyone would enable dark mode in Google Maps permanently, when it has the ability to switch color schemes according to the day & vision requirements. The feature is especially introduced for people who travels a lot and helps them to save battery life during navigation process for a long time!
How To Activate Dark Mode On Google Maps In Android & iOS?
To make your experience much easier, here’s a guide to enable dark mode on Google Maps permanently.
Make sure you’re running the updated Google Maps version. For Android, For iPhone!
Step 1- To enable dark mode on Google Maps, launch the navigation tool on your device & tap on the hamburger menu, located at the top-left corner of your display.

For iPhone users: Navigation option is present at the top of the list.
For Android users: Navigation option is located at bottom of the screen named as ‘Navigation Settings’.
Step 3- On the next screen, scroll to find ‘Color Scheme’ option under Map Display header. You’ll find three options: Automatic, Day & Night. By default, Automatic color scheme would be selected!
- Automatic color scheme will switch according to the requirements of vision. For instance, navigation would automatically turn dark during night time or whether you’re driving through tunnel during day.
- Day color scheme will reflect light theme throughout day & night.
- Night color scheme will activate Dark Mode permanently.
Step 4- Choose Night color scheme to enable dark mode on Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation.
Google Maps Night Theme affects its navigation mode only & not the entire interface of the app!
The feature is quite handy to improve night vision as your eyes will no longer have to strain while switching between bright & dark theme.
