Now as this year’s Google I/O event is over, let’s take a look at what Google has announced. While the majority of the sessions cater to developers, the event commenced with an eye-catching keynote presentation, aimed at providing insight into Google’s recent undertakings. The address highlighted Google’s progress in both hardware and software advancements, including a significant emphasis on AI (Artificial Intelligence).

Google I/O 2023 Summary: Here’s Everything Announced at The Event

• Google Pixel 7A, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel Fold Devices

Google has announced the release of new Pixel devices designed for both personal use and household convenience.

Google has introduced a fresh addition to its midrange A-series family, the Pixel 7A, which serves as a more cost-effective alternative to the Pixel 7 smartphone series. The Pixel Fold, on the other hand, represents Google’s first foray into the realm of foldable devices, directly competing with similar products from rival companies such as Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi. Additionally, the Pixel Pad, a new tablet powered by the same Tensor G2 chipset utilized in the Pixel series, has been unveiled by the tech giant.

• Android 14

Google has announced the latest version of its widely-used mobile operating system, Android 14, during the I/O conference. The company has also stated its intention to launch a Beta version of the software for specific devices.

This major update includes enhanced sharing capabilities, tightened security, and new lock screen customization options. These new features also include ‘cinematic’ wallpapers that offer unique visual effects inspired by iOS 16. Google plans to release the updated operating system during the later part of the summer season, and Pixel users are expected to be the first to receive the upgrade.

• Revamped Google Maps

Google has announced the addition of new AI-powered features to its applications, designed to enhance user experience. Google Maps, for instance, will receive an upgrade in the form of Immersive View, which incorporates advanced AI technology to offer an immersive, 3D-generated simulation of a user’s route, complete with landmarks viewed from a bird’s-eye perspective.

The feature will also provide up-to-date traffic estimations based on expected conditions, as well as real-time weather updates for the route. Initially, Immersive View will be available in selected cities, with further expansion expected in the future.

The upcoming Immersive View feature for routes will debut later this year, initially being made available in 15 major cities such as New York, London, Tokyo, and San Francisco.

• AI Infused Google Photos

Google is integrating generative AI into several of its applications. Google Photos app is set to receive a significant upgrade with the introduction of the Magic Editor feature, which enables users to move objects, add elements, and even modify the sky in their photos.

• Google Bard and PaLM 2

Google showcased the enhanced features of its chatbot, Bard, which now boasts a range of new capabilities that cater to both developers and consumers alike.

In addition, Bard will soon be equipped with new functionalities. It includes integration with Google Lens for image recognition, integration with Google Maps for visualizing locations, and integration with Sheets for creating detailed spreadsheets through simple text prompts. With these improvements, Bard is set to become an even more versatile and valuable tool for users across a range of industries.

Google’s chatbot, Bard, will soon be able to generate images based on prompts from users, thanks to a collaboration between Google and Adobe. Users will have the ability to request an image be created by simply entering a text prompt for Bard to work from.

Google’s chatbot, Bard, is now available in 180 countries without a waitlist, starting today. However, it is currently only available in English. The company plans to expand the chatbot’s availability to 40 additional languages in the future, allowing users worldwide to take advantage of its capabilities.

Google has revealed the second iteration of its PaLM AI language model, which will power more than 25 of the company’s products, including Bard. PaLM 2 is designed to be more efficient and faster. It can also handle multiple languages with ease, and is even capable of generating codes in Python and JavaScript. Moreover, the updated model is trained on multilingual texts, with support for over 100 languages across a variety of functions.

• Wear OS 4

Google has given a preview of what improvements to expect when Wear OS 4 arrives on smartwatches later this year. One major enhancement is the improved battery life, thanks to software optimizations. Besides that, there are several other features and upgrades to anticipate.

Google has not shared many details about the upcoming Wear OS 4 yet, but some improvements have been hinted at. The text-to-speech engine will be faster and more dependable, and users will be able to switch between phones and watches without resetting the watch through a backup and restore system.  In partnership with Samsung, new tools for creating watch faces will also be available to developers.

Later this year, Google will be introducing Gmail and Calendar to Wear OS, allowing users to browse their inbox, read and respond to emails, and mark important messages as favorites. Google Calendar will provide a schedule view that is comparable to the phone one, together with mobile RSVP and task completion.

• AI Powered Google Search

Google has revealed that it will be integrating Bard into its Search feature, which means that it will be possible to get natural language summaries of search outcomes. In addition, a “conversational mode” will be accessible, enabling you to inquire further about the outcomes.
