Onion Over VPN is an advanced privacy solution where your Internet traffic is redirected to a TOR (The Onion Router) network. In general cases, one can only access the TOR network using a dedicated TOR browser. But thanks to technological advancements, as now most renowned VPN services feature an “Onion Over VPN” option where you can directly connect the VPN to the TOR (The Onion Router) network.

How it Works and Why is it Better?

Wondering why you should prefer the “Onion Over VPN” feature? Well, there are numerous perks. But most importantly, when you connect to VPN using the “Onion Over VPN” feature, it protects your home IP address from being visible to the TOR network provider. Your connection is set up as a relay process, where it passes through an entry node, going through the target website that you’re trying to access, and then leaves through an exit node.

The beauty of “Onion Over VPN” is impeccably secure. The process majorly includes three crucial elements. Here’s how it works:

  • Entry Node: The initial node that knows your IP address.
  • Relay Node: As the connection passes through an encrypted tunnel, the relay node ensures that the entry and exit node never communicate directly to enhance your online anonymity.
  • Exit Node: The Exit node has no idea about the VPN provider’s IP address and is only aware of the website URL or target website.

Hence, it simply means that even if you’re connected to the TOR (The Onion Router) network, nobody will be able to view or track your IP address, and it’ll be like you’re connected to a regular VPN service provider.

One point to make here with vpns etc, is im pretty sure now with my experience that no matter how hard u try to hide your online activities, if you have a branded operating system like w10 or a smart phone like Samsung galaxy or security apps like McAfee etc, u can’t hide anything as these devices read your screen, every keystroke you make, ai is analysing every bit of data before its encrypted for keywords, onion site addresses etc. and all at firewall level and other apps built in to operating system that are also monitoring your every move no matter how hard you try its now built into a secure filesystem that’s needs special privileges to access, this security is for your security from criminals not to protect you anymore as since the new privacy laws in UK ai can monitor everything you do only when a security flag is triggered say you type in an onion address on a w10 versions 1903-2020 machine using onion over vpn windows will link that to your Microsoft account even using pc as local machine as they know who owns it by your activity so be aware I personally don’t think there is such a thing as privacy anymore not from snooping authorities they just allow these things in moderation to monitor your actions. And don’t forget WiFi/Bluetooth handshakes with any router or device near you also give away your geolocation along with so much else.

Tor has its own set of disadvantages. It showcases itself as an ultimate way to stay anonymous, but it is super slow since it has to pass the traffic through multiple layers!

My setup is overkill… VPN over TOR over VPN. This way both the TOR entry and exit nodes are protected. I know it’s really slow but tolerable for my needs.
