My Windows 10 Computer Keeps Restarting, What To Do?

1. Run SFC Scan

If your Windows 10 keeps restarting, the chances are that there is a corrupt system file. It could be that your computer is missing a critical file altogether. For this, you should run an SFC scan. Here are the steps for the same –

  1. Run command prompt as an administrator by typing cmd in the search bar next to Windows icon and from the right-hand pane choose Run as administrator
  2. When the Command Prompt administrator window opens, type SFC/ scannow command and press enter. This process will take some time to wait for the process to finish.
  3. After the process has finished, restart your computer

This process will replace or corrupt or bad files because of which your computer might repeatedly be restarting. Even after the SFC scan, your PC keeps on restarting Windows automatically head on to the next steps.

2. Fix Drivers

One of the reasons why your Windows 10 keeps restarting could be that your PC has outdated drivers. Here’s how you can update outdated drivers in Windows 10 or older versions. Though using a driver updater utility would prove to be much more convenient as it would automatically search for the best drivers and then replace an existing outdated driver with the new driver.

  2. Once installed, click on Start Scan Now button. This may take some time

3. Get Rid Of Corrupt Registries

And, if your PC or laptop keeps restarting, corrupt registries could be the culprit. In this case, the easiest way to get rid of bad registries is to help some of the best registry cleaners.

To manually fix corrupt registries, here are the steps. But much before you follow the steps below, make sure you take a backup of registries so that in case of a mishap, you can count on your existing registries. For this, follow the path File > Export and assign a name to this backup and save it to a safe location.

  1. Boot into Windows 10 Safe Mode
  2. Open run dialogue box by pressing Windows + R keys
  3. Type regedit and press enter. Press OK when the user account control prompt appears. This will open the Registry Editor
  4. Navigate to the below-mentioned path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>WindowsNT>CurrentVersion>ProfileList

  1. Go through the ProfileList IDs (starting from S-1-….). Remove any ProfileImagePath and exit the Registry Editor

Now, reboot your computer again and check if this step has fixed the issue.

4. Disable Or Cancel Automatic Restart

In plain and simple terms, take it this way, maybe there was a miscommunication because of a Windows failure and which triggered a feature called automatic restart. You can try disabling this feature and then check if the issue has been resolved –

  1. Open the Control Panel by typing Control Panel in the search bar next to the Windows icon
  2. Click on System
  3. On the left-hand side click on Advanced System Settings
  4. Under Startup and Recovery click on Settings
  5. Uncheck the Automatically Restart option and click on OK

5. Run Start Repair/ Automatic Repair

If your computer keeps restarting, you can also try running the automatic repair or start repair. This can be done using a bootable Windows installation DVD. The steps for automatic repair using Windows installation are mentioned below –

  1. Insert the DVD and restart your PC
  2. Press any key to boot from DVD or CD
  3. Select your preferred language and click on Next
  4. Click on Repair your computer at the bottom left
  5. When the choose an option screen appears to follow this path –

Troubleshoot > Advanced option > Automatic or Startup Repair. Now, wait for the Automatic/ Startup Repair to be complete

  1. Reboot your PC
