How To Enter DFU Mode On iPhone

Device Firmware Upgrade mode is used to restore a device from any state. It is a mode wherein your iPhone can interface with iTunes, without loading iOS. On iPhone, it is usually used to install a beta version of iOS or downgrade from beta version to a stable version. It is a mode wherein the BootROM can accept iBSS. How To Get DFU Mode on iPhone 8, iPhone X & Later Versions

Note: Update your iTunes to the latest version. Make sure your iTunes app is not running on your computer. To enter DFU mode on iPhone X, and iPhone 8, follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone X to the computer via Lightning Cable. Now force restart your iPhone X.

Step 2: Now press and release Volume Up button and followed the Volume button and then press and hold the Side button until the screen turns black

Note: If your iPhone is turned off, then wait for Apple logo to appear and disappear.

Step 3: As the screen goes black, continue holding the side button and press Volume down button for 5 secs. Don’t release the button until the iPhone appears in iTunes.

Step 4: Now let go of the side button and continue holding the Volume Down button until you get a prompt on the iTunes window on your computer that your iPhone is in recovery mode.

Your iPhone will be in DFU mode.

How To Enter DFU Mode on iPhone 7 /iPhone 7 Plus?

To enter DFU mode on iPhone 7 /iPhone 7 Plus, follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone 7 or 7 Plus to your computer using lightning cable.

Step 2: Switch off your iPhone.

Step 3:  Press and hold down the Lock button (locate it from the right of your iPhone)

Step 4: Now press & hold the volume button, while holding the Lock button. Continue holding these buttons for ten seconds.

Note: In case, the Apple logo appears on your screen, then you must follow the above two steps. If not, proceed further

Step 5: Let go of Lock button but keep holding the Volume Down button for 5 more seconds.

Note: If “Plug into iTunes” screen appears, you need to start the process again.

If the screen stays black, then the iPhone is in DFU mode.

How To Enter DFU Mode on iPhone 6s And Older?

To enter DFU mode on iPhone 6s and older, follow these steps:

If you have an older version of the iPhone, follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer using Lightning cable.

Step 2: Power off your iPhone by pressing the Power button and slide to Power Off.

Step 3: Press and hold the Power button for three sec.

Step 4: Now press and hold the Home button without letting go the Power button for another 10 seconds.

Step 5: Next release the Power button but keep holding the Home button till you see a prompt on your iTunes window saying your iPhone is in recovery mode.

How To Exit DFU Mode?

To come out of DFU mode, you need to force restart your iPhone.

To do that for iPhone 6s and older versions, press the Home button along with Lock button till your iPhone reboots.

For iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus, press and hold Side button along with Volume button till your iPhone reboots.

For newer versions, press and release Volume Up button, then press and release the Volume Down button followed by holding down the Side button until your iPhone reboots.

So, in this way you get into Device Firmware Upgrade or DFU mode on iPhone. Now that your device’s hardware is in DFU mode, you can quickly restore or go on with upgrading or downgrading of OS.
