Microsoft Is Making Changes To Default App Settings

Microsoft said that they are striving to improve the Windows PC experience in a blog post that was published on Friday. The business unveiled a feature that is said to provide Windows 11 customers more flexibility over default apps.

Why Is Microsoft Changing The Default Apps Settings?

Default Apps Settings

Windows 11 has received numerous complaints since its debut. Users were particularly angry about how it manages default programs. While changing defaults in Windows 10 was very easy, the same is not true about Windows 11. There, the default app for each app must also be manually changed. There are too many steps, and it takes a long time. Now it appears that Microsoft has made a final decision to make things right.

Step 4: Enter the desired file type or link type in the search bar, then choose it from the list of results.

Step 5: You can select the program that can open the file or link type.

Note: Alternatively, choose any program to see what file and link types it can open. Choose the file or link type, then your desired app, if you wish to make changes.

What Other Changes Has Microsoft Proposed In The Near Future?

URI

To make things simpler for consumers, Microsoft will unveil a new deep link uniform resource identifier (URI) later this year. When users want to modify how Windows 11 handles particular links and files, the developers will be able to direct them to the appropriate portion of the Settings menu thanks to the deep link URI.

Also, Microsoft claims that users will have more control over the pinned desktop apps. Microsoft also intends to improve the start menu’s and taskbar’s appearance and functionality via a public API. In order to provide applications the permissions they need before they appear in interface components, this API will display a question.

These features will roll out via the Windows 11 Insider Dev channel before being made available to the general public.

Your Thoughts On Microsoft Is Making Changes To Default App Settings

Personally, I feel that it should be the choice of a user to decide which app they want to use for opening a particular file type. By making it difficult to change default apps in Windows 11, Microsoft has tried to impose its decision on its users, which is a wrong step. I hope with the new proposed changes implemented soon, it will be easier to choose which apps we want to use for our everyday tasks.
