iOS 17.1 Update Drops on October 24 – New Features

Apple is preparing to release the iOS 17.1 update on October 24. This update addresses the radiation concerns identified in France and brings various improvements, such as updates to the AirDrop, Music app, and exciting Standby features. The primary objective of this update is to lower the radiation emissions from iPhone 12 models. This update emerged because French authorities were worried about the radiation from these phones. They asked Apple to stop selling iPhone 12 models in France.

Apple has rolled out this update to a group of willing participants, often referred to as “beta testers.” The company has committed to making this software update available to all iPhone 12 by no later than October 24.

iOS 17.1 Update Arriving October 24 – What’s Changing?

Earlier this week, Apple officially announced that the upcoming iOS 17.1 update will feature an adjustment aimed at reducing the radiation emissions of iPhone 12 devices. In September, France issued an order directing Apple to cease the sale of iPhone 12 models until they were “fixed” to meet European electromagnetic radiation standards. This directive came after the ANFR (French National Frequency Agency) discovered that the ‌iPhone‌ 12’s SAR value exceeded the limit set by the European Union, registering at 5.74 watts per kilogram.

France’s ban on the iPhone 12 will stay in place until Apple releases a software update to the public that fixes the radiation issue.

As per Apple’s statement, the ‌iPhone‌ 12 has always been considered safe to use. However, following the iOS 17.1 update, ‌iPhone‌ 12 devices in France will no longer boost their signal strength when they are off-body. Consequently, this adjustment may lead to reduced cellular performance in certain scenarios in areas with weak cellular signals.

Apart from the aforementioned updates, iOS 17.1 is set to usher in a host of fresh additions. These encompass refinements to the Wallet app’s interface for displaying card/bank balances, a new Apple Music’s’ favorite’ system, subtle modifications to the action button, extended support for Internet-based AirDrop, and a range of other enhancements.

Music Application

With the addition of a star icon, users can now mark any artist, song, playlist, or album as a favorite. This selection will be stored in their library, contributing to the enhancement of Apple’s recommendation system.
