What’s News in iOS 17.2?

Journal App

Unveiled at WWDC in June, the Journal app is a health and wellness-oriented feature designed to encourage users to consider both significant and everyday moments in their lives. This app facilitates reflection and the practice of gratitude through journaling on iPhones. Noteworthy features include scheduled notifications to assist in establishing a journaling habit, as well as the option to lock the app for added security. The Journal app protects user privacy by using end-to-end encryption, ensuring entries are hidden from everyone, even Apple.

Users can secure their journal entries using Face ID or Touch ID. Additionally, these entries are seamlessly synchronized with iCloud, allowing for convenient access across devices.

Spatial Video Recording

Furthermore, the update includes support for capturing spatial videos, a feature introduced alongside the iPhone 15 series in September. This functionality involves recording footage simultaneously from the phone’s ultrawide and main cameras to generate 3D videos. While there aren’t many real-world uses for this footage at the moment, it was specifically designed to be played back on the upcoming Vision Pro headset. The headset is expected to launch early next year.

Action Button Customization

Apple now enables users to enhance the customization of the ‘Action Button’ by incorporating language translation capabilities. As reported by Macrumors, pressing down the Action button activates a pop-up translation window facilitating language translation.

Updated Messages Application

A catch-up button is one of the new features added to the Messages app. This allows users to swiftly navigate to the initial unread message in a conversation by tapping the arrow icon in the top-right corner. Furthermore, Contact Key Verification is now implemented as a security feature, helping people protect themselves from online attacks.
