New Layer of Safety: Verification for Forwarding & Filters
“Last year, we introduced stronger safeguards around sensitive actions taken in your Google Workspace accounts. We’re extending these protections to sensitive actions taken in Gmail,” Google said in a blog post.
The following particular situations, taken from Google’s post, are where Google might add the extra step:
1. Editing an existing filter, Importing filters, or Creating a new filter.
2. Modifying the Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings to add a new forwarding address.
3. Enabling the settings’ IMAP access status.

When these actions are initiated, Google will evaluate the active session responsible for the action. If the session is deemed risky, it will receive a “Confirm your identity” notification for verification. By utilizing a secondary and reliable factor, like a two-step verification, users can verify the legitimacy of the action. If the verification process is unsuccessful or left incomplete, users will receive a “Critical security alert” notification on their trusted devices.
The feature exclusively aids Google identity users and applies solely to actions within Google products.
In a related update, Google has unveiled its latest enhancement: the inclusion of Gmail translation for mobile devices, encompassing both Android and platforms.
