As we all know recently French regulatory agencies identified that the iPhone 12 exceeds the permissible radiation levels in France. They have formally requested Apple to cease the sale of these devices within the country, while also raising the possibility of recalling phones that have already been distributed to customers unless Apple takes corrective measures. Apple, in response, refuted these claims, asserting that the iPhone 12 holds certifications from various international organizations, affirming its compliance with international radiation regulations.
Apple is set to roll out a software update designed to comply with the radiation regulations in France, addressing the concerns raised by French regulators about the iPhone 12. This update aims to bridge the gaps between the standards in France and those in other nations where the smartphone (iPhone 12) is available.

Apple’s iPhone 12 Update Addresses France’s Radiation Concerns
Apple believes that France’s distinct testing approach does not factor in the off-body detection and elevated connectivity capabilities that have been integral to all iPhone models for over a decade. To address this, an upcoming iOS 17.1 update for the iPhone 12 in France will be introduced, tailored to align with the unique testing protocol that mandates reduced power usage when the device is placed off-body on a stationary surface.
This change may result in a minor drop in wireless performance for French iPhone 12 users when their phone is off-body, i.e., sitting on a surface whenever the signal reception is weak. Apple highlights that all iPhones in the 12 series have upheld safety standards and are still safe to use.
What Was The Original Matter?
Turning back to the past, in September, Apple found itself in a controversy sparked by French regulators who raised concerns about the iPhone 12 emitting excessive radiation. The Agence nationale des fréquences (ANFR), which oversees radio-frequency emissions in France, undertook a comprehensive examination of 141 phones to gauge their Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The results of these tests unveiled that the iPhone 12 surpassed the permissible limit for radiation emissions when in contact with the body.
In a coincidental twist, Apple ceased the sale of the iPhone 12 in France, which happened to align with the release of the iPhone 15. Nevertheless, you can still find iPhone 12 models available for purchase both in physical stores across the nation and through online platforms, including certified refurbished options.
But with the intended release of iOS 17.1 specifically for all iPhone 12 models in France have settled this issue for now.
