Google has announced a new feature to help users clear space on their phones by automatically archiving unused apps. The feature was teased last year and is finally being rolled out, allowing users to free up to 60% of an app’s storage space without deleting personal data.
This auto-archive feature bears similarities to Apple’s Offload Unused Apps on iOS 11 and later, but is a welcomed addition for Android users struggling with storage space.
Google is introducing a new feature called Auto-Archive to help users clear up storage space on their nearly-full devices. Instead of uninstalling a whole app, including app data, when attempting to install a new app, users will now see a dialog that allows them to manually uninstall the app to make room. This new feature will reduce unwanted uninstalls and help users successfully install new apps.
What is This Auto-Archive Feature
This new feature offers a hassle-free way for users to clear up space on their devices without having to uninstall apps completely. By opting in, users can partially remove less used applications from their devices to create some space, while preserving the app icon and personal app data.
Should the user wish to use the app again, they can easily re-download it from Google Play and pick up where they left off. This new feature is set to streamline the process of freeing up space on Android devices, making it simpler for users to manage their app usage and storage.

How Does It Work?
Enabling auto-archive is a straightforward process that can be completed in just a few steps by users.
Step 1: If a user attempts to install a new app on their device when storage is full, a pop-up window may appear on their screen, asking if they wish to activate auto-archive.
Step 2: Once the user chooses to activate auto-archive, the feature will automatically archive unused apps on their device to create enough space for a fresh application request.

Availability of the Feature
The availability of the Auto-Archive feature is dependent on developers publishing their apps using the App Bundle. Apps that support archiving will be less likely to appear in the uninstall suggestions for users.
