Towards 2012, Google stopped offering the free G Suite, also known as Legacy Edition, to new customers. However, those with a free account could use these services at no charge. After a decade and many updates, Google has decided to end all free G Suite Legacy services by June 2022. Users have to upgrade to Google Workspace and choose a plan per their business requirements. This upgrade can only be completed once the Google billing Workspace is completed.
This is a mandatory step for all businesses who will receive access to Google workspace, a much more advanced G Suite. The basic services included Gmail, Meet, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Slides, and Sheets. The advanced version consists of the Meeting in Documents feature, Smart Canvas, and dedicated spaces. With more storage provision, Google offers 24/7 support to its Workspace customers along with increased security.
The good news for individuals and families who use their accounts for personal and non-commercial purposes is that the old G Suite legacy free version will continue working. They will be able to retain the associated email addresses and free custom domain names. The administrator maintaining these accounts can opt out of the transition to Google Workspace before 27th June 2022.
If no steps were taken, your account would be suspended on August 1, 2022. You can either upgrade to Google Workspace or contact Support to identify a non-business user to reactivate your account. Without losing service, qualified educational institutions and organizations can switch to the free Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals edition.
For those users who wish to move away from Google, the administrator can export all the data using Google Takeout.
