The company doesn’t have evidence that malicious code was inserted into the app or the vulnerability was exploited, but it’s better to take extra caution.

Whom This Security Issue Will Affect?

One of the most popular social media platforms in the world, where users share not only their daily lives with fellow Twitter users but also put essential data about themselves with the platform itself. If you are unsure about what to do, update to the latest version of Twitter for Android. This issue did not impact Twitter for iOS.

Twitter said in a statement – “Prior to the fix, through a complicated process involving the insertion of malicious code into restricted storage areas of the Twitter app, it may have been possible for a bad actor to access information (Direct Messages, protected Tweets, location information) from the app.”

A tweet from the Twitter Support revealed that “the issue was patched for Android version 7.93.4 (November 4 for KitKat) and version 8.18 (October 21 for Lollipop and newer).

“Twitter for Android is no longer supported on Android OS versions older than KitKat,” the tweet said.

With Android, being used in the larger ecosystem and increasing data breach incidents there’s only one thing we can do to ensure mitigation is to keep installed apps up to date.
