Pixel 4 Gets Eyes Open Face Unlock Option

In an update released today, Google introduced the much-awaited Eyes Open security feature. Although the feature was supposed to launch a month ago it wasn’t due to which company faced backlash. However, now it is live for use. This means anyone having a Pixel 4 running on Android 11 DP2 can use it.

What is the new Eyes Open feature?

The new Eyes Open feature is something Google Pixel 4 users have been demanding. Nearly six months after making an announcement Google has finally launched it. Earlier anyone could unlock the phone when users’ eyes were closed. But with this update, the loophole in facial recognition that allowed unlocking of phones even when the user was asleep is fixed. Now no one will be able to unlock the phone while you are asleep. Along with these new updates, Bluetooth connectivity issues are also fixed.

Not only this, but Google also offers an option to disable it.

Is this a new feature?

No, Apple already had it since 2017. However, for Google users, the answer is yes.

The absence of an open-eye detection feature was one of the biggest loopholes in Pixel 4 security. The flagship phones use Motion Sense and Soli sensors to ensure faster unlock. Lack of this feature allowed the unlocking of phones even when the eyes were closed.

Where to find the feature & how will it help?

You can find the “Eyes to be open” feature in the settings > Face unlock menu. Added to “Always require confirmation” under “Requirements for face unlock.”

Once enabled, you will be able to unlock the device when your eyes are open and the user is paying attention to the lock screen. Failing to do so will give an error message.

Further, it stops unauthorized people from unlocking and accessing Pixel 4 when the user is sleeping. In theory, it will help decrease accidental starts. To use this feature, you need to be running a second developer preview on your Pixel 4 device. Once you have it simply head to setting menu scroll to security.

Here scroll down to Face Unlock. Once there you will be able to find the Eye Open function in the requirements section.

What all is included in the April 2020 security patch?

In addition to this, Pixel 4’s April update also fixes:

The memory leak that disallowed additional Bluetooth Low Energy connections.

Call drop when using Bluetooth audio input.

Patched delay when launching keyboard in certain apps.

If you are a Pixel 4 user this is great news. Finally, Google has listened to its users and is giving them what was long-awaited. What do you think about this step? Was this feature seriously needed? Do share your thoughts in the comments section.
