Kinect Production Officially Ended By Microsoft

For all the Xbox360 and Kinect lovers, it is heartbreaking news that Microsoft has now decided to put an end the production of Kinect. It is just the retailers which will continue selling it till the stock lasts. But yes, do not expect fresh stocks from Microsoft. In an interview with Co.Design Alex Kipman and Matthew Lapsen, the two makers of the Kinect affirmed that Microsoft has pulled the plug on Kinect.

Kinect made its way in the game market in 2010 with $500 million marketing campaign and revolutionized the gaming world. And this is the reason that since its inception more than 35 million units were sold.

What Could Be The Reason For Kinect’s Demise?

It is a Darwinian evolutionary theory, “Survival of the fittest”, which means that you need to comprehend with the demands of the market if you wish to survive. This is where Kinect lagged a bit, as it was unable to meet the demands of the high-end gaming, which are based more on gamepads than motion sensing. Also, all major gaming organizations were reluctant to develop the high-end games for motion technology the one on which Kinect is based.

It was not an overnight decision, as the foundation was laid much earlier. However, every time when the rumor of Kinect’s demise spread, Microsoft always debunked such claims. But since its introduction in 2014, Kinect also attracted a lot of public outrage due to its high price and disapproval by game developers who were forced to add motion sensing controls in titles. Added with the hefty price of Xbox One, this only created more cringe among gamers. Hence it was totally inevitable that Microsoft would someday put an end to this odd bundling with their PS4 rival.

Kinect, a Guinness world record holder, for the fastest selling gaming peripheral though saying a final goodbye to all of us. However, the support will though continue for its users; though no new feature will be added to the device. If we talk about technology then it just an end for the product, not the technology. The technology used in Kinect will continue to play an integral role in many of the Microsoft projects like HoloLens, for depth sensing and Windows Hello cameras for signing into the device.
