Since the initial release of Microsoft Edge in 2016, it has been praised for the beautiful, clutter-free interface, features and security capabilities. Microsoft introduces new features and releases updates to enhance user experience as it wants to popularize its new browser ‘Edge’.
One of the biggest flaws of Edge is that it doesn’t ask for a specific location before downloading files. Only options available are, Pause and Cancel and the downloaded file gets saved to the default download folder.
Would it not be more convenient if Edge lets you choose the location you want to save the file? Well, a little tweaking in Windows Registry or Browser settings can do the trick.
- Enable/Disable Save Prompt for Download on Microsoft Edge by Making Changes in Advanced Settings.
Step 1. Click on Edge icon on the taskbar to open Microsoft Edge.
Step 2. Click on More Button (three dots on right-hand side corner), and click on Settings.
Step 3. Now on Settings panel, click on View Advanced Settings.
Step 4. Locate Download section in Advanced Settings, and navigate a setting “Ask me what to do with each download.”
Step 5. Toggle the button to right to enable and left to disable.
It is done, now every time you download a file, Edge will prompt you and ask whether to save a file or not.
- Enable/Disable Save Prompt for Download on Microsoft Edge by Making Changes in Registry –
Step 1. Go to Start menu, type regedit in the search box to open Registry Editor.
(You can perform this step instead of step 1 press Windows and R key together to open Run Window and type regedit to open Registry Editor)
Step 2. The UAC will prompt if you want to open Registry Editor, click Yes to continue.
Step 3. Registry Editor pane will open on the screen.
Step 4. Now, navigate to the below-mentioned path on the left side panel of Registry Editor.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge\Download
Note – If Download key doesn’t exist, then right-click on MicrosoftEdge key and then click on New and name this key as Download.
Step 5. Now that Download key is located/created, select and move it to the right panel. Do a right-click inside the right panel and choose the option ‘New’.
You will be provided by other options, click on DWORD (32-bit) Value. Assign a name to this DWORD Value as EnableSavePrompt.
Step 6. Now, if you want to enable save prompt, right click on EnableSavePrompt then input 1 as its Value and click Ok to save changes.
But if you want to disable save prompt, then change the value to 0 for EnableSavePrompt or simply delete the Download key.
