Edge Computing v/s Cloud Computing: Everything You Want To Know!

“New research suggests that many companies will generate and process their 75% of data outside the traditional data centers or at the edge of the cloud,” says Gartner, the leading research and advisory firm.

Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft are willing to grip Artifical Intelligence and 5G technology for the quick response time of data analytics. And this is where edge computing is popping its face up and high.

Let’s dig a little deep to get the insights of Edge computing and Cloud computing.

What Is Edge Computing?
What Is Cloud Computing?

IoT is growing at a rapid state. Handling, processing, and analyzing data near to the network or at the edge of the network is a gist of Edge computing.

When data is being handled near to its generating source, a quick process and its delivery in real-time makes Edge Computing a reliable future option.

The data is compiled and taken to a remote location or at the Data Center. In this case, all the required devices need to get connected with the cloud.

Cloud is a secure area that also provides remote access to users anytime. However, the distance between the two ends increases.

Example: Managing traffic data using a real-time connection!

In case, when various IoT devices are punching multiple data, edge computing can play a major role by preprocessing it quickly according to the real-time and helps in saving time & resources.

Reducing latency is the basic concept, followed by edge computing.

Example: Netflix.

See, your entire entertainment data is present on the cloud services; all you have to do is log in and use it. Netflix doesn’t reach you at an individual level, but vice versa.

Things are settled at one good location in the case of cloud computing.

Is Edge Computing Going To An Edge Over Others?

Well, you can’t exactly compare the pros and cons here as both stand crucial at their respective positions. Yet, we will quickly go through the benefits of Edge Computing in brief.

1. Work Speed

In some cases, for example, the healthcare or aviation sector, reducing latency is much required to save people or a million dollars. Reduced speed can cause damage and competitive issues in a short span of time even.

Hence, data needs to be localized in such cases, and the speed of edge computing can’t be ignored. Ultimately, you get to take quick decisions and this option is noteworthy.

2. Need Of Expensive Infrastructure Lowers

Usually, data centers and centralized location of storing data require expensive investments. It is not easy to capitalize on such huge storage and jeopardize future investments already.

But edge computing allows one to expand the capacity of data collection through various IoT devices. The decision is itself cost-effective at one end, and the scaling of data becomes easier.

3. Single Disruption Can’t Take Down Your Services

Since cloud computing is settled at one single platform, any malware attack on it can disrupt the whole services with one wrong shot. In the case of edge computing, various devices and micro-data centers are responsible to store the information. If one point is attacked, you don’t need to disrupt the whole scenario.

No need to shut down the entire network in case any attack has been suspected. Required measures could be taken at a particular point, hence saving energy and time.

4. Solves Real-Time Necessities

Now it is evident that response time reduces and many companies that require a quick solution to any present problem prefer the option of edge computing. It happens because data is stored very near to the place it is required rather than a huge cloud far.

Some Lows Of Edge Computing

Who Wins?

Well, when you talk to multiple experts, their thoughts differ on every single point. At a certain call, edge computing is going to take over the world real soon, but we think that cloud computing would never be left aloof.

These are different technologies, and both are improving on a huge scale. Yes, minor issues could be tackled by edge computing, but at a stage when an IT company grows tremendously, they would like to invest better with cloud computing services. Edge computing hasn’t been grown so much that results could be declared now. But one thing is sure, dependency on only cloud services has gone for now.

Rest, it’s technology! It has grown fast and will develop further. We will wait for the “real-time” to calculate the balance of edge computing and cloud computing.
