How to Stop Users from Changing Desktop Wallpaper on Windows

In many organizations the desktop wallpaper is locked. No matter how much you try, the wallpaper will remain the same. If you too wish to lock the desktop wallpaper of your home PC to stop users from changing it then you are at the right place.

In this article, we will explain to you in detail how to stop anyone from making a change to your set wallpaper. One is by using registry editor and in case you do not feel comfortable in making changes to the registry the other method is by using Local Group Policy Editor.

Using Registry Editor

Note: Please set your desired desktop wallpaper before going through the steps below.

1. Click on Start button, type regedit and press Enter. In the UAC nag that pops, click on Yes to start Registry Editor.


2. Now navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
You will find the key, ActiveDesktop.

3. Now right click on ActiveDesktop key. From the drop-down menu select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.


4. You will now see a new value with name New Value #1.

5. Now double-click on the new value to change the Value data from 0 to 1. Once done click on Ok button.

That’s it. Now close Registry Editor. To check, you can try changing your desktop wallpaper from any saved image on your system. You will be glad to see that right clicking on image and choosing Set as desktop background is also not going to change the desktop wallpaper.

Using Local Group Policy Editor:

Note: Please set your desired desktop wallpaper before going through the steps below.

1. Click on Start button, type gpedit.msc and press Enter. This will open Local Group Policy Editor.

2. Click on User Configuration > Administrative Templates.

3. Now double click on Control Panel Setting.

4. In the Control Panel setting, double click on Personalization.

5. Again double click on Prevent changing desktop background.

6. Now select on Enabled option and click on Apply, Ok.

Now close Local Group Policy Editor window.
