Facebook takes up a stance against ‘Revenge Porn’

Technology has two faces, like everything else. Quite often Hyde takes over Jekyll. We get to hear too many instances that scare, frustrate and make bitter cynics out of us.

In a decadent world, where people gleefully take pleasure in another’s pain, Facebook has given us a ray of hope.

After allegations and lawsuits, Facebook has now announced that it is all set to combat against all forms of content that invade people’s privacy. The Social giant seeks to reduce instances of ‘Revenge Porn’ – as it is popularly called these days – with its series of tools and trained personnel.

“It’s wrong, it’s hurtful, and if you report it to us, we will now use A.I. and image recognition to prevent it from being shared across all of our platforms,” Mark Zuckerberg, the social network’s founder and chief executive, said in a Facebook post.

How will the tools work?

The tools will allow us to report any intimate photos posted without consent, which will flag the pictures to a committee of Facebook trained representative, who will then review the photos and remove it immediately if it infringes upon the community’s standard. If the content is deemed harmful, the accounts of users who upload such pictures might be blocked.

Further, this personnel will be using a photo matching technology, to avert future misuse of similar photographs and to ensure such photo is not uploaded again. If anyone tries to upload the pic, he/she will be alerted and warned not to violate community policy.

NY times mentioned in an article, “The company also published a guide on reporting and removing such intimate images, and said that it had teamed up with safety organizations such as the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, which operates a hotline for victims of nonconsensual pornography.”

This matter got hyped when active-duty Marines posted nude and private photos of women recruits of Marine Corps. A committee of Defense Department investigation was appointed to investigate the matter.

Facebook then took the matter into its own hands and designed a set of tools to prevent such indecent posts. Not only Facebook is ready to fight against this pernicious form of harassment but has also included Instagram in this war.

Well, talk about ‘Social’ responsibility. Something to cheer about.
