Apple’s ‘Imagination’: Tech Giant Set To Develop Own Graphic Chips

Apple is one of the most sought-after brands among the smartphones available in the market across the globe. It is also one of the few smartphone manufacturing companies which develop their own mobile processors. Now, Apple is all set to design its own graphic chips for future iPhones.

Earlier, Apple used to rely on Imagination Technologies for the graphic chips but according to latest updates, Apple would soon be using its own chip technology. Imagination’s graphic chips were used for a lot of Apple products i.e. iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple TV and even Apple Watch.

“Apple has notified that it has been working on a separate, independent graphics design in order to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination’s technology,” Imagination said in a statement.

Apple has remained reticent about the same. Earlier there were rumors about Apple buying Imagination Technologies, but apparently, they never reached a deal. Apple currently holds 8% of the total share in the company. After six months, MacRumors reported that Apple poached some of the talented engineers to get this plan to work.

If Apple succeeds in developing this technique, soon we will have an A-series chip with both Apple designed CPU and GPU, probably with the launch of next iPhone series. Apple has already mastered CPU design with its ARM-based processor cores which make it a stand out amongst all the other. But Developing a GPU is going to be a tough nut to crack, as it needs deep analysis and Imagination Technologies is dubious if Apple would be able to develop a new technology without violating the existing patents.

Apple is one of the biggest clients for Imagination Technologies. With this news in the market, the shares of the British company fell from 180p to 80p, leaving the company’s worth to less than £250m. Before the dip, the company was worth £765m.

All these recent events have set a stage of the intriguing battle for the patents and rights. However, there can be a different scenario, if both the companies settle for an agreement.

Let’s see which way the wind blows…
