Apple Makes a Sly Yet Futuristic Leap With iOS 10.3

  • Space Optimization – The system also changes it’s inode number to 64-bit that makes data more secure than ever. It is also helpful in data optimization as it still utilizes the TRIM command to create additional space on devices.
  • File Cloning – This sounds like something that will clog storage, but is quite the opposite. Clones created by the system are stored without taking any additional space and help preserve various versions of a file efficiently.
  • Snapshots – This technology creates read-only copies of files for easy sharing and faster performance.
  • Encryption Support – APFS also improves security with disk encryption support for files and metadata. Users can choose between single-key encryption or multi-key encryption for each specific volume.
  • Protection from Crashes – Apple File System also ensures that metadata integrity is maintained, especially after system crashes during updates. This is achieved by writing new records instead of overwriting old ones. This way no corrupted records are created, hence preventing system crashes.

With so many changes on the table, this sure was a giant leap of faith for Apple Inc. as storage system is one of the most important components in digital devices. Hence, any sudden changes could be disastrous if anything goes wrong. Nevertheless, no problems have been reported so far, which means that the transition is certainly smooth and is certainly a major achievement.
